AUGUSTA – Andrews Post jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and rode the strong arm of Jason Carter to a 9-1 win over Augusta in the Maine State American Legion tournament at Morton Field Sunday afternoon.

The Portland-based team received solid hitting from one through nine in the lineup with Andrew Krucher and Mike Grimaldi each drilling solo home runs over the left-field fence.

“We hit the ball from the top to the bottom of the order,” said Andrews coach Mike Rutherford. “And Jason did a great job of getting ahead of the batters, allowing the defense to settle in.”

“I didn’t have my best stuff today so I just tried to get ahead in the count and keep the ball down so the defense could make the plays,” said Carter.

Joe Martin, Malcom Cone-Coleman, Joe Fessenden and Ryan Baker each had a pair of hits in the victory.

Augusta was held scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning when a walk to Caleb McKenzie by relief pitcher Bartley Foley and a triple by Brandon Cummings broke up the shutout bid.

“We have played a total of 42 games this season and it shows in how the team attacks the ball at the plate and in the field,” said Rutherford. “We traveled to Florida and played games in Vermont and New Hampshire. It really gets you ready for this type of tournament.”

Andrews Post will square off against Brewer Monday at 4 p.m. in the winners’ bracket while Augusta will meet Mid Coast in the loosers’ bracket at noon.
