Built to shelter two squadrons of Navy P-3 Orions, the Hangar Six project at Brunswick Naval Air Station is an engineering marvel.

Among the highlights:

n The hangar will measure 880 feet long and 80 feet high at its tallest point, providing nearly 182,000 square feet of space. A nearby building to house snow removal equipment will provide an additional 17,000 square feet.

n Two 380-foot-long box trusses will support the hangar, the largest trusses in the Navy. They each contain approximately 1 million pounds of structural steel and will be erected using a 230-ton crane and a 275-ton crane.

n Supports for the hangar rest on bedrock, which varies between 45 and 93 feet below ground.

n Roughly 10,000 cubic yards of concrete will be needed for the hangar and small runway apron.

n The hangar is designed to withstand 100-mile-per-hour winds and was sited to take advantage of sun exposure to help with snow and ice removal.
