SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) – Matthew Muldoon pitched out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings, holding Richland, Wash., to one run to lead Saugus, Mass., to a 2-1 win Sunday at the Little League World Series.
Saugus advanced to the semifinals with the win.
Massachusetts scored in the second inning thanks in part to three walks. Muldoon was walked to start the inning. Tyler Grillo singled and then Sebastiano Petruzzelli and Tyler Calla got back-to-back walks to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Washington’s deficit grew to 2-0 following Petruzzelli’s RBI groundout to third.
Washington threatened in the fifth when Eric Yardley singled and Daniel Jacobs and Trent Sikes reached on errors to load the bases. But Cody Shepherd grounded into a forceout to end the inning.
Muldoon gave up singles to Jamison Rowe and Kyle Stumetz with one out in the sixth and committed a throwing error to allow one run to score. After a passed ball put runners on second and third, he struck out Yardley and got Kelly Castleberry to ground out to end the game.
