CHESTERVILLE – Moving money will be the issue before Chesterville voters Thursday night at a special town meeting. The four articles on the special warrant all involve transferring funds from one account to the other, meaning no new money would have to be raised or appropriated, says town Clerk Pat Gordon.

The first order of business, after a moderator has been selected, will be to choose whether to transfer $11,000 from the Egypt Pond Road account to the summer road maintenance account.

According to Gordon, the original estimate for repairs on the Egypt Pond Road, which are now completed, was much higher than the actual cost. At the town’s annual meeting, voters raised and appropriated $27,286 for the road, but as of July 31, only $4,179 had been expended, Gordon said.

Voters will again be asked to draw from the Egypt Pond Road account and move the money into an account to fix the roof of the Town Office. Gordon said that earlier this year water dripped through the leaky roof onto her desk.

The fire department accounts will also be considered. One article asks if voters will transfer $5,000 from the firetruck reserve account to an account to refit a tanker truck, which was recently donated to the town.

The town recently purchased a new truck, Gordon said, adding that $5,000 has been put away by the town each year toward purchasing a truck.

Another request is that $5,400 be transferred from a general fund into the fire department’s account.

That would help match a $49,050 federal grant the department was awarded earlier this summer.

That federal money, which came through the FIRE Act grants and the Department of Homeland Security, will go toward the purchase of 10 new sets of head to toe turnout gear, which costs around $1,100 per outfit, and 10 self-contained breathing apparatuses, which cost between $3,500 and $4,000 per person, said department Chief and town Selectman David Archer.

The special town meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Town Office.
