BOSTON (AP) – Ted Williams is still helping the Jimmy Fund.

So is actor Ben Affleck.

A Red Sox-themed Massachusetts license plate bearing Williams’ uniform No. 9 was sold at auction for $140,000, with the proceeds going to the children’s cancer charity the Red Sox Hall of Famer favored during and after his career. Phil Morse, one of the team’s minority owners, was the high bidder.

Affleck bid $50,000 for plate No. 1, which is Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr’s retired number.

Other numbers in the auction were 406, Williams’ batting average in 1941, and Nos. 5, 8 and 27 worn by Nomar Garciaparra, Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk, respectively.

The license plate auction raised $240,000 as part of an all-day radiothon that brought in $1.1 million.

The Red Sox Foundation made a $25,000 contribution. Other big-name contributors included New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who gave $10,000, and Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, who gave $50,000.

The Jimmy Fund, one of the world’s largest cancer charities, supports the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. It has been the official Red Sox charity since 1953.
