BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) – More than 60 boats cruised Nantucket Sound in protest against energy-producing wind farm Sunday.

The flotilla of sailing boats, fishing vessels and motor cruisers gathered at about 1 p.m. off the Barnstable village of Cotuit and sailed to the wind farm’s data collection tower about 11 miles south of Hyannis in Horseshoe Shoal, the Cape Cod Times reported.

Protesters said they wanted to show just how big the structures will be by getting close to the 197-foot tall data tower.

Cape Wind Associates has proposed building 130 wind turbines, each almost 250 feet tall, in a 24-square mile area of the sound.

“I love this area. Let these pristine waters remain for our sons and daughters,” said Frankie Spellman, 46, of Mashpee. “These people here care deeply about this. Right here is not the right place.”

A spokesman for the company that wants to build the wind farm called the protest “a floating frat party.”

According to the company, Nantucket Sound has all the right conditions – consistent wind, shallow and sheltered water – for the turbines.
