FARMINGTON – Registrations are being taken for boys and girls in grades one through six who wish to participate in the Farmington Recreation Department’s Instructional Soccer League. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5.

The focus of this league is to teach fundamentals, refine playing skills, improve fitness levels of the players and educate them in the rules and basic concepts of the sport of soccer. Having fun is the primary goal of the program.

Participants will be separated into two divisions structured by school grade to promote balanced competition and equal play opportunity. The divisional setup is as follows: Division 1, grades one through three; Division 2, grades four through six.

This fall the program, now in its 24th season, will once again be under the guidance of Coach Joel Smith. Serving as individual team coaches this year will be members of the Mount Blue Girls and Boys Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer teams as well as volunteer students from the University of Maine at Farmington.

Registration is from Sept. 2-5 at the Community Center.

Drills begin for all players Sunday, Sept. 7: Division 1 at 12:30 p.m.; Division 2, at 2:15 p.m. They continue through championship matches for both divisions or semi-finals on Oct. 19. League action will take place at the University of Maine at Farmington soccer field, also known as Prescott Field.

A standard registration fee of $20 is charged to all players. There is a $5 nonresident fee charged to participants who do not reside in the immediate Farmington area or whose parents do not pay taxes to Farmington.

All players are expected to dress for games in the Farmington Recreation Department’s Youth Sports Team jersey. The purchase price is $20 and protective shin guards are optional but available for $3 per pair.

Registration forms are available in the Recreation Department’s office at the Community Center on Middle Street. For more information, phone 778-3464 or 778-3444.
