James Spaulding runs for 234 yards and four touchdowns as Lewiston crushes Windham.

LEWISTON – In one quick blast up the middle, James Spaulding welcomed the Windham football team to the big time.

Spaulding found the holes opened by his offensive line and burst through the left side for a 63-yard run on the game’s opening play Friday night. That play set the tone as Lewiston scampered all over Windham, 55-6.

Spaulding scored three of his four touchdowns in the first half as Lewiston built a 27-6 lead. He finished with 234 on 14 carries.

“It was all the line,” said Spaulding. “When the line does a good job, I just do what I can. Then things get done.”

Lewiston had a size advantage on the Eagles up front and outmuscled Windham to the tune of 490 total yards, all on the ground.

“I thought Windham did a really nice job on our option game,” said Lewiston coach Bill County. “They put the safeties out on the wings to make sure we couldn’t get outside. What it does is it opens up the inside. We’re strong tackle to tackle, and we took what they gave us.”

Spaulding broke through the middle on the game’s first play and scampered through the secondary for a quick 7-0 lead. He added another score with 3:29 left in the opening quarter with a 26-yard run.

“Last week, they played Cony pretty well,” said County. “Typical of a lot of young teams, if you let them stay in the game, they start feeling good about themselves and then you might be in trouble. So I was really pleased that we came out and were able to put two on the board the first few times we had the ball and established how the rest of the night was going to go.”

Spaulding scored again with 4:59 left in the half with a five-yard run around the right side. The Eagles managed to throw the ball well in the first half, getting 102 of 147 first half yards through the air. When Pete Cekutis hooked up with Rob Larochelle on a 55-yard pass play, the Eagles were within 20-6 with 2:58 left in the half. Jake Angelides nixed that momentum on the subsequent kickoff. He returned it 83 yards for the score and 27-6 lead.

In the second half, Lewiston scored three times in the third quarter. Spaulding scored his fourth of the game from 46 yards out on Lewiston’s first possession of the half.

“When they turn it up, there were huge holes every time and I was just making cuts off that,” said Spaulding of his blockers.

George Foisy took one from 57 yards and Jeff Briggs plunged in from the 1 for a 47-6 lead after three. Neal Couglin scored off an option play from 14 yards out in the fourth. Lewiston’s defense held Windham to just 64 total yards in the second half.

“It was everything that we expected,” said Spaulding. “We watched the films carefully. We just made sure we knew what was going on. We made sure the blocking assignments got done, and we followed the blocks.”
