1914 – 2003

BRIDGTON – Edward Sanford Tarbox, 88, of Winslow Street died Tuesday evening, Sept. 9, at the Bridgton Health Care Center.

He was born in Harrison on Oct. 20, 1914, the son of Chester D. and Edna Haynes Tarbox. He graduated from Bridgton Academy and worked for Cushman Baking Company.

During World War II, he drove the defense bus from Harrison to Portland. In later years, he started a bus service transporting students to and from school. During the sumer months he rented his busses out to local girls and boys camps.

For many years he operated a car dealership and was widely known as “Trader Tarbox, the poor man’s friend.” He was a HAM radio operator and his call sign was W1FHG.

He is survived by one son, James, of Harrison; one sister, Celia Ballard of Harrison; one grandson, Robert of Harrison; three great-grandchildren, Eli, Adam, and Kayla, all of Harrison.

He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel; and one son, George.
