ROXBURY – A Connecticut woman was listed in fair condition Monday night at a Lewiston hospital after breaking her leg in a car accident, officials said.

Josephine Botti, 72, was traveling alone on Route 120 when her car went off a sharp curve in the so-called “notches,” Maine State Police Trooper Terry James said. Her car went into the guardrail, he said, and “threw her across to the other side” of the highway. It skidded up a bank and landed on its side.

“It was a classic accident,” the trooper said.

Firefighters from Roxbury and Rumford were called and cut the roof off the Toyota to get Botti out.

James said Botti broke both lower leg bones of one leg and bruised her sternum. She was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where a nursing supervisor reported she was in fair condition.

Botti was staying at a camp in the area, he said.

Botti’s pet was rescued also.

“We took a kitten out of a box in the car,” James said.

Assisting at the scene around 8 a.m. was Mexico police officer Robert Gallant.
