POLAND – The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday scheduled a special meeting for Sept. 30 to discuss a water business, a dog ordinance and road management.
At a recent special town meeting, voters rejected an article that would have created a public-private business partnership for water exploration between the town and former Selectman Ira “Ike” Levine. Other people have also expressed an interest in water exploration partnerships with the town.
Town Recording Secretary Sue Goss said selectmen want to hold an in depth discussion Sept. 30 to decide whether they want to consider any such ventures in the future.
The board will also consider a barking dog ordinance and recent joint meetings of selectmen, School Committee and the Planning Board.
Goss said that a recent court ruling that provisions in the town’s barking dog ordinance don’t stand up in court is the reason the issue will be discussed.
Road management and existing infrastructure as it relates to schools and other town needs will be considered.
In other business, selectmen agreed to enter into a contract with Almighty Waste of Auburn to haul solid waste. The owner of Almighty Waste attended several selectmen’s meetings during the summer and asked several times for a contract with the town. Goss said the town will retain its garbage truck and could still haul some of its waste.
The board also signed a law enforcement service contract with Androscoggin County. The level of service provided by the Sheriff’s Department will remain the same. The reason for the new contract is salaries are changing.
