FAYETTE – State transportation workers plan to close Mosher Pond Road at 7 a.m. Wednesday to replace a culvert. The road, which is known as Chesterville Ridge Road on the Chesterville end, is expected to be reopened by late afternoon.

The state is in the process of improving the Fayette portion of the road by 1,000 feet a year, DOT representative Skip Williams said.

After improvements are made, which includes widening and moving the road away from Mosher Pond and installing guardrails, the partial dirt road will then be paved, he said.

The Mosher Pond Road extends north from Route 17 at the Twelve Corners intersection just east of the Livermore Falls-Fayette town line.

“We’re going to be closing the road between Route 17 and North Road to replace a deteriorated culvert,” Williams said.

The new culvert being installed is 30 inches in diameter and made of corrugated metal.

“We’ll set up coffer dams and pump the water out, and dig up the old pipe and replace it with the new one,” Williams said.

Water from a wetland area drains through the culvert.

“We’re doing it with our own forces and our own material,” Williams said.

The cost of the project was unavailable.

During the road closure, traffic will be detoured by way of Route 17, the North Road and the Knowles Hill Road.

Mosher Pond Road will remain open to local traffic from either end of the detour to the work site, but no through traffic will be allowed, Williams said.

In case of inclement weather Wednesday, the work will be rescheduled to Thursday.
