AUBURN – Sewer construction projects on Oak Hill and Lufkin roads have been completed. Sewer District trustees were given a construction update Tuesday.

One of the finished projects is a 250-foot sewer line extension that will serve four residential lots on Lufkin Street, a short street off Manley Road near Poliquin Avenue.

The total cost of that project was about $12,000 because it was done in conjunction with a paving project by the Auburn Highway Department.

The project on Oak Hill Road, near Lake Auburn, extends the sewer line by 560 feet. The cost of that project was about $25,000.

Auburn Sewer District Superintendent Norm Lamie said the construction of piping on Goff Street was recently completed. Paving is scheduled for next week.

He said Court Street was patched after the completion of sewer construction work, leaving the surface looking “like a patchwork quilt.” The Maine Department of Transportation will resurface Court Street in the spring. Lamie explained that the state will do the paving because Court Street is classified as a state aid road that connects state highways.

Bids for the sewer line construction on Summer Street may go out as early as November, according to Lamie. Most of the project is slated for spring. Some work along the brook will be done in the winter.

“The ground is frozen along the brook, so you do less damage rather than digging in mud,” Lamie said.

That project was delayed several months by a required study to ensure there are no Native American artifacts along the brook.

In other business, trustees discussed adopting Section 125 of the IRS Code that would allow payroll-deducted health insurance premiums paid by district employees to be tax exempt. It would be similar to “cafeteria plans” employees of some businesses and governmental agencies have.

“In our case it would be a single-item cafeteria plan,” Lamie said.
