BRISTOL (AP) – An endangered humpback on Friday has become the latest whale to die off the Maine coast.

At least five dead minke whales have been found floating in the past 16 days. Some had marks or wounds that appeared to be caused by fishing gear, and one had an unusual square wound in its abdomen.

Scientists say it’s possible that at least some of the whales were feeding on fish contaminated by red tide.

Scientists on Friday were examining the carcass of the juvenile whale, which was towed by the Coast Guard to Pemaquid Beach.
