TURNER – After starting the year off 0-3, the Leavitt Hornets were looking for a few breaks to go their way.
Thanks to some changes in the lineup (and a favorable schedule), the Hornets appear to be in the process of turning their season around. That turnaround continued Friday night as Leavitt easily handled Old Town, 63-8, in a Class B football game.
“We was looking forward to these two games to help build our confidence before the Belfast game,” said Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway.
The Hornets scored every time they had the ball in the first half. Junior Broc Hardacker started the Leavitt’s march to the end zone on the first play. Taking a pitch from quarterback Dustin Gilbert, Hardacker broke up the right side of the line for a 75-yard touchdown run.
The Hornets didn’t waste much time as they held the Indians on the next set of downs. Following a short punt, Chris Brewer punched it in from 4 yards out to make it 14-0 early in the first period. Kyle Davis, Brandon Hinkley and Tyler Poland each scored for the Hornets before Hardacker ended the first half with another long touchdown score.
The Leavitt offense continued to dominate the game, facing only a third down once in the game.
“We’ve been practicing better and playing better in games,” said Hathaway.
Old Town finally put some points on the board when freshman Wesley Comeau scored from six yards out early in the fourth quarter.
The competition gets a little stronger next week as Leavitt travels to Belfast in a rematch of last year’s regional final.
“We’ve been looking forward to that game for a long time,” said Hathaway. “That was a tough loss last year. We had a good effort against them. We played solid defense but struggled to score points. We are looking forward to going back”.
