Prayers are being offered around the world for Pope John Paul II, whose health is failing after a lifetime of service to the Catholic Church.

According to the Vatican, no other pope has held more general audiences. He has met with more than 16 million pilgrims in special Wednesday gatherings since his election to the papacy in October 1978.
