OXFORD – An Oxford man was charged with three felonies stemming from an alleged assault on his girlfriend early Sunday morning.

Christopher Mack, 34, was charged with Class A robbery, Class B aggravated assault and Class C terrorizing. He also was charged with violation of bail conditions, as he was out on bail for two pending aggravated assaults that occurred last spring.

Oxford Police Sgt. Theron Bickford said Mack and Sue McKeen, 28, of Oxford began arguing shortly after they arrived at their Vernon Lane home at 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

He said Mack allegedly punched her in the face, kicked her and pulled her hair.

“At some point in the confrontation, he grabbed a knife, held her down and threatened to kill her if she didn’t give him her money,” Bickford said. “After struggling some more, during which Mack attempted to strangle her, McKeen was able to get free. She then drove to a friend’s house in Norway.”

Bickford said despite receiving injuries to the face from the punches and to the chest from the knife, McKeen declined medical treatment.

Mack was arrested later Sunday at a friend’s residence in Norway.

Bickford said he was charged with robbery, although nothing was taken, because Maine laws state the requirements of a robbery charge are that someone commits or attempts to commit a theft. It was a Class A crime because physical force was used with a dangerous weapon. The statute lists a minimum of 10 years in prison for the crime.

He said the assault was elevated to aggravated status because a dangerous weapon was used. The Class B crime carries a sentence of 5 years to 10 years in prison.

Bickford said the terrorizing charge was a Class C felony because the suspect threatened to kill her and he had a deadly weapon. It calls for a 3- to 5-year sentence.

Mack did not post bail, which was set at $150,000 single surety or $50,000 cash.
