This month the Academic Advocate has chosen to interview Mr. Dave Kivus, the new ELL teacher who actually went to Lewiston Middle School. When asked why he chose to teach he replied “I chose to teach because it’s a career with many positive aspects. I feel that I’m really contributing to the community. In my opinion the best thing about teaching is that it is challenging. It’s a constant test to be better and do each task better than the last. When you’re teaching you have a lot of contact with other people. There is a lot of respect from your students, and the other faculty. I really feel that I’m helping the community.”
Mr. Kivus teaches ELL. When asked why they changed ESL to ELL he responded “ELL stands for English Lanuage Learners, ESL stands for English as a Second Language. What the people higher up were finding is that many of the students know more than two languages already so English isn’t really their second language.
We also asked what the best teaching level was and what made it so exciting. He replied “I think the best teaching level would be Middle School because it is a very influential time in children’s lives. Almost everything you do or say either encourages or discourages something in their future.”
“I also like middle school because many exciting things happen, like dances and fund-raisers.” We asked Mr. Kivus what he teaches and how long. “I’ve been teaching since 1990. I started as an Education Technician and did that for about 10 years. I also did Adult Education. Now I teach math, English, reading, government, Social Studies and I still do Adult Education.” Well, that’s Mr. Kivus, Lewiston Middle Schools new ELL teacher. Thanks a lot Mr. Kivus!
