LEWISTON – The YWCA of Central Maine announces the ninth annual Week Without Violence activities Oct. 19 through 25. Each day will offer events around a specific theme. All events are free and open to the public.
Sunday, Oct. 19, “A Day of Remembrance”: Join in a communitywide prayer to remember those whose lives were lost as victims of violence.
Monday, Oct. 20, “Protecting Our Children”: Protecting Our Children Online from 6 to 7 p.m. at SAD 52 Adult Education in Turner. Hear information on ways to keep children safe on the information highway. Call 225-2478 for more information. Sponsored by Advocates for Children.
Parenting 101: Good Discipline, Good Kids from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lewiston Adult Education. Learn how to earn respect, communication skills and ways to effectively set rules, expectations and limits. Call 795-4141 for more information. Sponsored by Advocates for Children.
Violence awareness and prevention education will be done throughout the week at the Auburn and Lewiston school departments.
Tuesday, Oct. 21, “Making Our Schools Safe”: Bullying Magic Show and spaghetti dinner, 5:30 p.m. dinner and 6 to 7:30 p.m. show at the YWCA of Central Maine, 130 East Ave. Sponsored by Advocates for children. Call to preregister at 795-4050.
Wednesday, Oct. 22, “Confronting Violence Against Women”: March Against Domestic Violence across Longley Bridge to Heritage Park in Lewiston at noon.
Workplace Violence Awareness facilitated by the American Red Cross at the YWCA from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Giving individuals and employers in the workplace an introduction to the knowledge necessary to identify and reduce the risk of workplace violence.
Thursday, Oct. 23, “Facing Violence Among Men”: “Tough Guise,” a 90-minute video presentation that looks at the media and how it portrays what it means to be male in society and male violence in general, from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a discussion after. Hosted by Abused Women’s Advocacy Project at Bates College Pettengill Hall.
Friday, Oct. 24, “Eliminating Racism and Hate Crimes”: Race Unity Potluck Dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. at the YWCA. People from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds are invited to celebrate the beauty and oneness of the human family. Join in the multi-cultural food and entertainment with Native American drumming.
Saturday, Oct. 25, “Replacing Violence with Sports, Recreation and Fun”: Magic YWorld at the YWCA from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The YWCA pool will turn in to an indoor water park with an inflatable float named “Tropical Obstacle.” Free (maximum capacity is 60 people).
