Rowe school welcomes new vice principal

NORWAY – It was a long vacation for Kim Ramharter, but she finally came home.

The new assistant principal of the Guy E. Rowe Elementary School had spent 21 years teaching in Alaska and she and her husband, Nick, decided it was time to move to Maine.

She said the salmon was good in Anchorage, but she also likes lobster.

Ramharter was born in Winthrop, went to the University of Maine at Farmington and then in 1980 went on a vacation to Alaska.

She met Nick there, began teaching and had two children, Josh, now 20, and Jordan, now 11.

“They were having a tough time getting teachers,” she said.

Kim said she and Nick, who was also an educator, enjoyed Alaska, but they wanted to continue their education on a graduate level.

So, they looked for a graduate program where they could take their children.

“We found one in Hattiesburg at the University of Southern Mississippi,” she said. “It was an experience. Both Nick and I are northern people.”

Kim received her graduate degree in administration and supervision.

After graduation in 2002 she said the family finally got to come home and moved to Bethel. Nick is working for Sunday River.

“I heard about Oxford Hills and knew I wanted a job here,” Kim said. The district has a good reputation. I wanted to be a part of this professional community.

“And we’re thrilled, absolutely thrilled about being here,” she said.

She called Anchorage a small city with big city problems.

“I’m glad to come back to a rural area. I like not having red lights and parking meters,” she said. “It’s refreshing being able to go into a post office and not have to wait 40 minutes.”

She said she wants to work with the teachers at Rowe school.

“I have an open-door policy,” she said. “I’m approachable.”
