LEWISTON – During the opening banquet for the 130th annual convention of the Maine State Grange, the State Membership and Community Service Committees presented monetary awards to top Granges in the Net Gain, Total Gain, Community Service and Pride in Maine contests.

The state membership co-director reported that although the Maine State Grange overall experienced a net loss of 3 percent during the past year, it is the smallest net loss the Grange has experienced in a number of years. The winners for the largest net gain in members for the year were: first, Huntoon Hill 398, $300; second, Seaside 567, $200; and third, Porter 569, $100.

The winners for the largest total gain in members for the year were: first, Penobscot View 388, $150; second, Seaside, $100; and third, Porter and Chesterville 20, $25 each.

The winners of the community service contest were: first, Aziscoos 402, $250; second, Passadumkeag 586, $200; third, Enterprise 48, $150; fourth, Androscoggin 8, $100; and fifth, Ammadamast 379, $50.

The winners of the Pride in Maine contest, which recognizes a grange’s contributions for the community and its own Grange, were: first, Aziscoos, $250; second, Passadumkeag, $200; third, Cambridge Valley 582, $150; fourth, Waterford 479, $100; and fifth, Pioneer 219, $50.

State Master Steve Verrill congratulated the winners, stating, “People want to join something that is doing something.”
