CANTON – Road Commissioner Craig Gammon brought his three lowest bids on a backhoe to the selectmen’s meeting Thursday night and presented his findings.

He had tested all three machines.

Selectman Chris Wainwright brought a motion to the floor to purchase the used CASE from Beaureguard Equipment for $48,900. The one abstaining vote was from Selectman Susan Gammon.

The CASE, which sells new for around $78,000, comes with 233 hours of use.

A discussion with the board and Gammon about how the town would pay for the backhoe is set for the next selectmen’s meeting Thursday, Nov. 13.

The board also approved buying a new timer for the heater at the transfer station to keep the truck warm in the winter.

Stephanie Jacques of Miss Stephanie’s School of Dance in Mexico presented a request to start dance lessons in the town hall in January if she gets enough students.

Jacques has run a dance studio in Mexico for seven years and wants to offer Canton and nearby towns the opportunity to have students learn either tap, jazz or ballet.

The selectmen encouraged her to proceed with advertisements and come back to the board when she has enough students.

The board discussed the $20 application fee for requesting sewer hookup. Currently the cost for hooking up to the town sewer has a cap of $500.

Selectmen discussed doing an income survey; this survey is needed for a grant for the Fire Department.

The board continues to collect data for the Government Accounting Standard Board, the objective to improve government’s accountability in financial reporting and provide additional information for decision making.

It is a federal ruling that municipalities list all assets of the town.

Selectman Jackie Conant said the old records are in good shape, but she requested the board consider a laminating machine to preserve the single-sheet records.

She was given the approval to pursue purchasing a machine.
