WEST PARIS – Deputy Fire Chief Tom Spear got the go-ahead Thursday to have the front springs of the ladder truck replaced for an estimated $1,200.

The Board of Selectmen approved the job after Spear explained the job and that the money is in the Fire Department budget. Berlin Spring Co. can do the work Oct. 30, Spear said.

The truck was purchased last year.

“As long as you have the money, the job ought to be done,” Selectman Howard Gurney said, “and I’m for it. Let’s get the truck ready so it can be used.”

Spear also was given the go-ahead to have the commercial inspection done and to buy materials to do minor body repair. The inspection is estimated to cost $34 and the metal needed for the body work was estimated at $500. The money is available, and the body repair will be done by members of the department.

Another project being studied is replacement of the overhead doors in the fire station and adding 9 feet to the front of the number four bay to accommodate the ladder truck.

Spears quoted a price of $9,410 from International Door Co. of Lewiston for fully insulated doors installed.

“All the material is included as well as installation, but we will have to contract for wiring the outlets for the openers. It doesn’t seem like that would be much of a job, and I don’t believe it should cost all that much,” he said.

“I don’t believe it should, but you need to bring us a price on that before we make a decision,” Gurney said.

It was also pointed out that the quote on the doors should also include new doors for the highway department garage as well.

Chairman Wade Rainey said Road Commissioner Bill Keach “was trying to save some of his budget for new doors too so the quote really should include those as well. You need to talk with him and get back to us to see if he is ready for doors and they can be included in the quote.”

The issue will be taken up again when Keach’s plans are known, final quotes for all doors and wiring are confirmed.

Spear said the amount raised for the doors was $10,500.

He will also be looking for bids on the addition to the number four bay at the fire station and report to the board when he has figures.
