LEWISTON – A local man was charged with two counts of attempted murder Saturday after apparently shooting one man and injuring a woman, police said.
Richard Dehart, 38, was shot in the shoulder and neck, said Police Lt. Tom Avery. Fernande Thibodeau, 52, was reportedly cut by bullet fragments.
Both were being treated in the emergency room at Central Maine Medical Center Saturday night. The wounds were not life threatening, police said.
Michael Heon, 46, of 1 Davis St., was being held at the Androscoggin County jail Saturday night on the two attempted murder counts. Police said more charges could follow.
Dehart and Thibodeau were known to Heon, Avery said.
The two had been together at the intersection of Lexington and Westminister streets when they were injured, police said.
Afterward, they drove in an Oldsmobile to a nearby Big Apple store on Lisbon Street to seek help. A witness called police at 3:45 p.m. from the store to report the incident, Avery said.
“There was a lot of blood. They were looking for somewhere to go, somebody to call who could help them,” he said.
Saturday night police continued to interview several witnesses from the scene of the shooting. Avery said it was still unclear whether Dehart and Thibodeau were in a car when they were assaulted, nor were they certain how many shots were fired.
Heon was arrested outside of his home. Off-duty Auburn Police Officer Donald Gosselin spotted Heon’s car and matched it to the vehicle description and partial license plate number he had learned shortly before getting off work.
He turned his car around and followed Heon’s Ford Ranger pickup truck after it passed him going in the opposite direction on College Street, police said.
Gosselin called emergency dispatch on his cell phone to report Heon’s location and direction.
Avery said Heon likely used a long gun, but police have not determined the specific type.
