FRYEBURG – Fifteen people were taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after a head-on collision involving a school bus carrying children from a summer camp in New Hampshire.
A Ford Taurus was headed east on Route 302 when the driver drifted into the westbound lane and hit the bus, Fryeburg police Sgt. Michael McAllister said.
According to McAllister, the 45-year-old driver of the Ford Taurus, whose identity has not been released, was the only person who suffered serious injuries.
He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center by a LifeFlight helicopter. His condition was unknown Sunday, but McAllister said his injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Three other people in the Taurus and 11 of the campers on the bus were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
The passengers in the Taurus went Bridgton Hospital, and the campers, all girls in their teens and pre-teens, were taken to North Conway Memorial Hospital in New Hampshire.
According to McAllister, the campers mostly suffered bumps and bruises.
The bus was chartered by Camp Robindel in Moultonborough, N.H.
At the time of the accident, it was carrying 49 campers, five counselors and the driver. They were coming from Harrison, Maine, where they had visited another summer camp, McAllister said.
The section of Route 302 between Denmark Road to Stanley Hill Road was shut down for three and a half hours after the accident.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation Sunday night, but, according to McAllister, speed and alcohol were not involved.
