AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Richard Hamilton scored 24 points, Corliss Williamson added 20 off the bench and the Detroit Pistons beat the New Jersey Nets 98-84 Sunday for their fifth straight win.
It was the first meeting between the teams since New Jersey’s sweep in the Eastern Conference finals last season.
Ben Wallace had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Detroit, which improved to 5-1. Chauncey Billups and Elden Campbell scored 11 each.
Jason Kidd led the Nets with 18 points and 11 assists, and Kerry Kittles scored 17. Jason Collins added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Detroit trailed by as many as 13 in the first quarter, but rallied to take a 48-47 edge at halftime.
The teams traded baskets throughout the third, but Detroit finished with a 6-2 run to take a 75-70 lead into the final period.
The Pistons moved the margin to 82-74 with a six-point spurt and had a chance to take a double-digit lead, but Lindsey Hunter missed a 3-pointer with 8:30 left.
Raptors 89, Nuggets 76
TORONTO – Vince Carter had 34 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Toronto Raptors to an 89-76 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.
Carter went 14-for-22 from the field for the Raptors, who improved to 4-0 at home and 4-2 for the season.
Milt Palacio added 14 points and six assists, and Jerome Williams had 13 rebounds.
Andre Miller had 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Nuggets. Rookie Carmelo Anthony had 19 points.
Carter scored 14 points in the third quarter, including a four-point play that gave Toronto a nine-point lead.
Pacers 85, 76ers 74
PHILADELPHIA – Ron Artest scored 30 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Indiana Pacers to their fifth straight win, an 85-74 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday night.
Jermaine O’Neal added 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, whose 13-point first-quarter lead turned into a five-point deficit entering the fourth quarter.
But Artest and O’Neal led the Pacers on an 18-4 run to take control.
Allen Iverson scored 37 points for the Sixers.
Indiana rallied from the start of the fourth quarter, getting a 3-pointer from Reggie Miller to tie it, then Artest followed with a 3 on the next possession for a 69-66 lead.
Artest extended the lead when a flagrant foul was whistled on Glenn Robinson.
Hawks 91, ‘Sonics 81
SEATTLE – Jason Terry scored 23 points and the Atlanta Hawks sent the Seattle SuperSonics to their first loss of the season with a 91-81 victory Sunday night.
Stephen Jackson had 15 points, Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Dion Glover scored 13 points for Atlanta.
It was Atlanta’s first road win of the season after losing its first four games away from home.
Seattle was the league’s last unbeaten team, winning its first three games while averaging 111 points. Ronald Murray scored 24 points in his fourth start in place of the injured Ray Allen.
