LEWISTON – Coastal Enterprises Inc. AmeriCorps Program has partnered with the Lewiston-Auburn Alliance for Services to the Homeless Committee to coordinate a Diaper Walk in recognition of National Homeless Awareness Week. On Saturday, Nov. 15, the partnerships will join, aided by volunteers, to receive diaper donations for local organizations who distribute items to those in need.
Due to recent lack of funding, items such as diapers have become unavailable for distribution, but the need remains. AmeriCorps members Beth Cato and Tonya Sands coordinated a Diaper Drive by requesting donations from local businesses and hanging flyers asking for personal donations from residents for diapers to be distributed to the homeless living in Lewiston and Auburn.
AmeriCorps members attended alliance meetings and made committee members aware of their project. The drive will conclude with a walk.
“The walk is to exemplify the difficulties of being homeless. Hope Haven Shelter closes at 8 a.m. and residents walk nearly a mile to local soup kitchens to snack on breakfast items or to wait for their lunch,” said Cato.
AmeriCorps and the alliance are looking for volunteers to show their support by participating in the walk. Diaper donations are not necessary but appreciated. Volunteers will meet at Hope Haven, 209 Lincoln St., and will walk to the Trinity Jubilee Center, a local soup kitchen, which also distributes donations, located at 247 Bates St. Diapers will be donated to the Jubilee Center.
Parking is available at the Chestnut Street garage located on the corner of Chestnut and Lincoln street. For more information, contact Cato at 795-6820.
