BETHEL – Gould Academy math teacher and Maine Master Guide John Wight will be the featured speaker at the monthly Trout Unlimited meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Trustee’s Auditorium of the McLaughlin Science Center on the Gould Academy campus.
The presentation will focus on Wight working with young people in his guiding business as well as fly-fishing in Western Maine and on the Salmon River in Pulaski, N.Y.
Dinner will be available in the Ordway dining hall before the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. Cost for dinner is $6.50, and tickets can be purchased in advance from John Wight, P.O. Box 436, Bethel, ME 04217. Advanced ticket purchasers will receive a gift of three flies tied by Wight.
This is not the first time that Wight has been recognized for his work with young people. He was recently filmed for an upcoming episode of “Camo Country,” the outdoors television program produced by the New England Sports Network (NESN). The show will focus on Wight’s work with young people and feature footage of Wight guiding Gould students on the Androscoggin River. It is expected to air this winter or early spring.
For three generations Wight’s family has guided canoe trips on the Allagash and St. John’s rivers for Camp Arcadia, a summer camp for girls on Pleasant Lake in Casco. Wight’s trips introduce Arcadia’s campers to all aspects of river travel including camp craft, ecology, whitewater canoeing and canoe safety.
