WINTHROP – The State YMCA of Maine’s Youth in Government program is accepting applications from any Maine high school student. The Youth in Government program is a Model Legislature program in which participants serve as legislators for a weekend at the State House in Augusta.

The weekend will be held April 30, May 1 and 2, 2004. Students elect the leadership, including the youth governor. They serve as members of the House and Senate, debate the bills that they have written, create a newspaper to report the happenings of the weekend and meet students from all over Maine.

The program happens in two sections – participants attend a local training session held regionally Jan. 24 at Leavitt Area High School in Turner, Jan. 31 at Central Aroostook in Mars Hill and Feb. 7 at Erskine Academy in South China. At these sessions, participants submit bills, run for the leadership positions and learn how the Augusta session works. Deadline for training session registration is Jan. 15.

Any student interested can contact their school or the Maine YMCA Youth in Government Office at 39B Highland Ave. Winthrop, ME 04364 or e-mail winymca@aol.com.
