1921 – 2003

LEWISTON – Bertrand J. Guay Sr., 82, of 50 Homefield St., Lewiston, died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 20.

He was born in Lewiston on New Years Day 1921, the son of Origene and Beatrice (Cote) Guay.

On Nov. 27, 1954, he married the former Gervais Vallee whom he was married to for 41 years before her death on Oct. 14, 1996.

“Bert” was a U.S. Veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army with the 378th Infantry Division having served in the European Theatre of Operation in the battles of Ardennes, The Rhineland, Central Europe and Northern France.

He was employed by the City of Lewiston in the Public Works Department as a street light line and wire operator a trade he had learned in the U.S. Army.

He was known to his family and friends as “Ketchup” a nickname given to him because of the use of the condiment. He enjoyed walking whenever he could and made many friends at the Auburn and Lewiston malls where he would walk in the cold weather months.

He is survived by one daughter, Diane Guay and her companion Tom Hallowell of Lewiston; two grandchildren, Guylene Gregoire and her companion Wayne Spiller Sr. and Steven Gregoire; two great-grandchildren, Torie-Jean Gregoire and Wayne Spiller Jr.; two brothers, Marcel and his wife Theresa Guay of Jay and Gerald and his wife Margo of Chambly, Canada; one sister, Lucille Grenier of Lewiston.

Besides his wife he was predeceased by one son, Bertrand Guay Jr.
