AUGUSTA – Heather Harrell poured in 20 points to lead the University of Maine-Augusta over the Eastern Maine Community College, 72-41 in women’s college hoops action Monday night.

After playing a lackluster first half, the Moose came out firing on all cylinders at the start of the second going on a 10-0 run from which the Eagles of EMCC never recovered.

Racheal Furay and Amanda Peppin added 13 points apiece for the Moose who imporve to 1-2 on the season.

EMCC (0-3) was led by Jessica Fitzmaurice with 13 points. Ami Trundy added nine points.

Men’s basketball

UMA 80, EMCC 77

AUGUSTA – Coop Nickerson scored 23 points and pulled down 20 rebounds as the University of Maine-Augusta overcame a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Eastern Maine Community College, 80-77.

UMA trailed 35-30 at the half, but busted out of the intermission and quickly assumed the lead. The Moose led by as much as 11 before EMMC made a late charge to close the gap to two before coming up short.

Darrold Harbin added 19 points for the Moose, while Chris Melgard chipped in with 16 points.

Kyle Arbuckle paced EMCC with 32 points, while Daryle Watson added 15.

University of Maine 68, Bethune-Cookman 63

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kevin Reed poued in 17 points and Joe Campbell added 13 as the University of Maine scored its first win of the season, 68-63 over Bethune-Cookman College.

Maine shot 52 percent in the second half to overcome a six-point halftime deficit. David Dubois scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Black Bears (1-1), while Jon Wallingford added eight points off the bench for Maine.

Markey Picard paced Bethune-Cookman (0-1) with 14 points.
