Lisbon posts its second win ever over the Falcons in a dual meet.

RUMFORD – Tim Sewall came out aggressively and it eventually paid off for the Lisbon wrestler as he pinned Devon Roberts to clinch the meet as the Greyhounds rallied for a 39-33 win against Mountain Valley in Mid-State League action Wednesday night.

Lisbon (2-0), three-time defending Class C state champions, posted its second win ever over the Falcons in a dual meet.

Sewall, a senior, had allowed the Falcon freshman an advantage early on and trailed 4-2. Roberts had rolled through a standing takedown, but it was Sewall who eventually settled in.

“I really didn’t have a strategy,” Sewall said. “I just wanted to go out on the mat and let things happen. The main thing for me was to be aggressive.”

Class B Mountain Valley (0-1) had been set up for the dramatic ending by freshman Zack Bradley who had won a thrilling 11-9 decision at 119-pounds. Charlie Stambach had come back to tie the score 9-9, however, Bradley executed a reversal with 51 seconds left in the match.

The Falcons had forced the issue by erasing a double-digit deficit. Ben Madigan (protecting a previously broken nose at 152) and Chris Brennick (160) each won major decisions. Chris Smith (171) and Travis Dragoon (189) pinned opponents in the first period. Dragoon stuck Rob Tietjen in 25 seconds. “I’m really encouraged,” Falcon coach Gary Dolloff said. “The kids (152-189) have been wrestling well. I thought Lisbon would have pulled away from us, but it was great being this close. My (four) freshmen looked good.”

Lisbon regained the lead by winning two of the next three matches. Jake Sprinkle slid behind for a takedown in the second and then held on for a 5-4 decision over Mike Hanson (215). The Hounds’ Tyler Clark pinned Mike Gilbert in a cradle at 103.

David Smith (275) of Mountain Valley pinned Elijah Trefts. The Falcons forfeited at 112.

In the evening’s first match, Travis Child of Mountain Valley recorded a 4-2 decision against defending state champion Nate Hix. The Falcon co-captain wrestled in close and executed a two-point near fall in the final minute.

“Some kids came through for us,” Lisbon coach Mark Stevens said. “It’s a good win for us, but the real test is on Saturday at the McDonald’s (Invitational). The (lack of) conditioning was a factor in several matches.” The Greyhounds had jumped ahead 18-3 on pins by Derek Giusto 135, Troy Clark 140 and Josh Dubois 145. Clark wrapped up Aaron Arsenault in the first period.
