WILTON – A State Police spokesman confirmed on Tuesday that Wilton contractor Raymond “Butch” Weed was killed by a gunshot but declined to give specifics.

It has been two weeks since friends dropping off Christmas gifts came across the body of the 40-year-old owner of New Horizon Builders in the entryway of his 32 Main St. home just before 7 p.m.

State Police detectives have kept information about the case restricted, saying they most likely won’t release any information about the how and the why in the homicide until a suspect is arrested.

Rumors have been rampant in Wilton, where Weed was revered as a good friend, employer and generous volunteer. He was a Sunday School teacher at the Farmington Baptist Church, a member of the Lion’s Club and a Little League football coach.

On Tuesday, State Police spokesman Steven McCausland validated one of the rumors, saying, “We can confirm that this was a shooting death.”

McCausland also said that a dive team was in Wilton on Monday searching a body of water for clues, although he would not specify which body of water.

Several waterways are located within a short distance of Weed’s home, including Wilson Stream and Wilson Pond, commonly called Wilson Lake. The home was returned to his family last weekend.

About 100 people have been interviewed, many multiple times, McCausland said.

Sometimes detectives re-interview people as new information surfaces or police find they need to clarify details.

Detectives continue to work out of the Wilton Police and Fire Station; on Tuesday, eight detectives were in town.

McCausland said it’s not uncommon for murder victims in small communities to be well known but said Weed’s renown is above and beyond. “This is a case where everyone knew the victim.”

The “vast majority has been very helpful” in providing police with information about Weed, McCausland said. “We appreciate their candor.”

As the investigation continues, police aren’t giving up hope, McCausland stressed.

“Our resolve today is as strong as it was two weeks ago.”
