The shed had been used as a work space to repair small engines.

LIVERMORE FALLS – A kerosene space heater is blamed for a fire that destroyed a small engine repair shed at 10 Dillman Lane early Friday afternoon.

Dillman Lane is located off Lower Park Street (Route 133).

Fire Chief Ken Jones said owner Jim Howes of Winthrop told him he was working in the shed at 12:50 p.m. when he heard a pop from one of his two space heaters in the opposite end of the building.

When he looked, the end of the 12-by-32-foot shed was engulfed in flames. Firefighters from Livermore Falls, Jay and Livermore responded to the call, which is automatic mutual aid for a structure fire, Jones said.

There were no major injuries, he said, but Howes did suffer a slight burn on his right hand.

The chief had no estimate for the damage, and Howes told him he had no insurance. In addition to his shed and tools, three riding tractors and four snowblowers, all awaiting repair, were destroyed in the fire, Jones said.
