1918 – 2004

LEWISTON – George J. Simones, 85, of 115 Wellman St., Lewiston, died Saturday, Jan. 10, with his family by his side at d’Youville Pavilion following a short illness.

Born in Lewiston on Aug. 17, 1918, he was the son of James and Aristea Lambrew Simones. He attended Lewiston schools, and served in the Army Air Force during World War II with the 707th Signal Aircraft Warning Company in the Aleutian Islands.

After the war he returned to the family business, Simones’ Hot Dog Stand, and on Oct. 6, 1946, he married Helen C. Petroulis.

Even though he retired in 1982, he still greeted his customers until just before his death.

He was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

He was also a lifetime member of VFW Post #22 and of the American Legion. He loved being with people, working outdoors, spending time at his cottage, and especially loved harness racing and county fairs.

He is survived by one son, James G. Simones and his wife Linda; two grandchildren, George J. Simones II of Greene, and Melissa Ann Simones of Lewiston; a sister, Helen Houlares of Auburn; two brothers, Christo Simones of Auburn, and the Rev. Charles J. Simones of Waterford, Conn.; a cousin, Charles Simones of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Helen, in 1996; and a brother, Nestor Simones.
