GREENE – The Ropes Program that brings law enforcement officers and youths together was presented to selectmen Monday night with a proposal to establish a course on a town-owned parcel behind Greene Central School.
Maine State Trooper Scott Gosselin and Greene Central School Counselor Jennifer Simmons asked the board for permission to build a ropes course in Recreation Park. There would be no cost to the town.
The intent of the program that resembles an obstacle course using ropes at heights not exceeding 3 feet is to provide youths with an atmosphere where individual and team-building skills are emphasized. There is an atmosphere of character building, improvement of self-esteem and anti-drug messages.
Selectmen took no action pending discussion with state officials because of state and federal funding for Recreation Park.
Simmons said she hopes that children from SAD 52 schools in Leeds and Turner could also use the course.
Gosselin said he had to complete a ropes course at the old State Police Academy in Waterville. “I was very impressed with some of the skills you learn with the ropes course,” Gosselin said. “I focused on getting a ropes course started here. I think it’s a really good project for the area. I think it’s a really good project for the state police.”
He said he hopes to work with youths who are at risk.
