1909 – 2004

LEWISTON – Leona M. Poirier, 94, of 25 Marston St., Lewiston, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the d’Youville Pavilion.

She was born in Lewiston to Fred and Stella Metayer on April 4, 1909. She was educated in the Lewiston school system and lived in Lewiston her entire life. She was a life-long member of St. Patrick’s Church.

On July 14, 1930, she was married to Romeo J. Poirier, who passed away on June 13, 1997. She was employed in several local stores as a salesperson, including B. Peck & Co., Senter, Giroux & Canniff, Lincoln Store, and Leblanc’s Cleaners.

She and her husband Romeo were partners in business for many years as co-owners of Bates Distributors, a wholesale distributor of malt beverages and soft drinks. Mrs. Poirier maintained her own apartment until very recently.

Survivors include her sister, Beatrice LePage of Auburn; sister-in-law, Andrea Poirier of Lewiston; 11 nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years; sisters, Louise Scott, Margaret Stevens, and Lois Maxwell; and a brother, Norman Metayer.

Though Leona and Romeo had no children of their own, they were loving and thoughtful “parents” to many. This loving couple will be greatly missed by friends and family. Mrs. Poirier wishes to thank all her caregivers who have helped her in the last months, especially friends and neighbors, Carmen and Richard Thibodeau.
