ACADIA NATIONAL PARK (AP) – The popular Echo Lake beach area is the latest section of Acadia National Park targeted for capital improvements.

The park is accepting public comment on a $715,000 plan to build new comfort stations at Echo Lake, move the septic system away from the beach, build a new paved path to the beach for handicapped visitors and clear away trees and brush that obscure the water view.

Echo Lake is one of Acadia’s most popular destinations for families, particularly those with toddlers, according to Len Bobinchock, assistant park superintendent.

The project follows major investments by the park in its two campgrounds, Seawall and Blackwoods, both of which will cost about $3 million to upgrade. The park is financing the Echo Lake project through its annual capital budget; other project, such as the campground upgrades, are being paid for mostly with entrance fees.

The project is expected to take a year to complete and will be done in the off-season to avoid disruptions to tourists.
