1926 – 2004

PORTLAND – John P. Higgins Sr., 77, of South Paris died Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Dixfield on Oct. 7, 1926, the son of John M. and Florence Porter Higgins. He attended schools in Dixfield and had been employed at Robinson Manufacturing in Oxford for many years.

He had been a member of the Oxford Police Department and a member of the Foster-Carroll American Legion Post 72. He married the former Leotha B. Seamon, she predeceased him in 2000. He later married the former Virginia Maguire Gammon.

He enjoyed trips to Nova Scotia, socializing with people, carving and wood-burning walking sticks and bird feeders. He faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army.

He is survived by his wife of South Paris; a daughter, Caroline Sweetser of South Paris; two sons, Gary of Norway and John Jr. of Bethel; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, James of Farmington; and a sister, Madeline Oldham of Sangerville.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Gloria Wilbur, Ruth Hunting and Shirley Brazier; a brother, Garfield Higgins; and two half-sisters, Gertrude Petley and Ruth Locke.
