1915 – 2004

LEWISTON – R. Anna Wellander, 89, a resident of 41 Pleasant St., Auburn, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25, at St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion following a long illness.

She was born in Bethel, Jan. 15, 1915, the daughter of Howard F. and Katherine (Chadbourne) Maxim. She was a 1933, graduate of Mechanic Falls High School, and in 1935, married C. Edward Wellander.

Mrs. Wellander was a 50-plus year member of Court Street Baptist Church where she had been active until her illness. She was past president of Young at Heart; and a long time member of Charlie’s Angels Art Class; and had been employed over 25 years for the former Ward Brother’s Clothing Store in Lewiston.

Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, knitting, and after retirement, she enjoyed oil painting and water colors.

Survivors include one son, Robert E. Wellander and his wife, Doris of Wetunpka, Ala.; one daughter, Janet Irish and her husband, Joel of Turner; two brothers, James Maxim of Albuquerque, N.M., and William Maxim of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Helena Bailey and Alice Ayres both of Palm Meadow, Fla.; four grandchildren, Scott and Mark Wellander, Jennifer Running Deer and her husband, Tyler and Joanna Krouskup and her husband, Rob; as well as six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, C. Edward Wellander in 1970; and one sister, Nettie Pearl.
