JAY – The annual Special Olympics kick-off supper will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Amvets Hall Post 33. Dinner will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a presentation of donations, auction and drawing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. followed by a dance with Rick Graham & Co. Band from 8 p.m. to midnight. The dinner menu includes chicken stew, chop suey, baked beans, seafood chowder, rolls and dessert. Dinner prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Dance prices are $10 per person cover charge.

The Amvets Special Olympics committee also is looking for snowmachine helmets for Olympians to wear while riding snowmachines at the winter games at Sugarloaf USA. For more information, call the Amvet hall at 897-4112 or Chairman Gerry Toothaker at 778-9417.

Legislative caucus

FARMINGTON – The Western Maine Legislative Caucus will be held Friday, Feb. 6, in Olson Student Center at the University of Maine at Farmington. Coffee will be served at 7 a.m. followed by breakfast. Speakers will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Kit St. John of the Maine Center for Economic Policy and state Rep. Peter Mills, R-Cornville, will lead a discussion of these questions: “What would a 1 percent property tax cap, as proposed in an initiated bill likely before the voters in November 2004, mean for state and local finance? And what alternative arrangements of state and local taxes might be better?”

January luncheon

FARMINGTON – A January community luncheon will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church on Academy Street. The menu includes beef stew with biscuits, cole slaw, beverage and cake. All are welcome. The meals are offered at no charge to members of the community.
