Quebec scores with 15 seconds left to play to edge Lewiston 4-3.
Lewiston just can’t seem to solve Quebec, even with a lead.
Alexei Shkotov scored on passes from Josh Hennessy and Simon Courcelles with 15 seconds left in the game to lift Quebec to a 4-3 win over the Lewiston Maineiacs in Quebec City.
Three of the Remparts’ four goals came on the power play.
“I think we played O.K. in this game,” Maineiacs coach Mario Durocher said. “I just think we didn’t do our job killing penalties, and that really hurt us.”
One of the heroes for Quebec, as he has been all year against Lewiston, was Hennessy, who along with Shkotov had a goal and two assists Friday.
“He has been good against us all year,” Durocher said. “We have to try and keep the puck deep on them, and being on the road, I had to try and get my lines right against theirs. It’s not that easy.”
Lewiston started out on fire, scoring on its first shot at 2:55 to go ahead 1-0.
On that goal, Gabriel Balasescu scored his 32nd of the season on passes from Richard Stehlik and Pierre-Luc Faubert, giving the Maineiacs an early lead, a luxury in recent games.
Lewiston enjoyed a 7-1 advantage in shots to start the frame, but Quebec stormed back to eventually outshoot the Maineiacs 11-10 in the opening period. On the Rempart’s 10th shot, they knotted the score on a power play. Justin Laverdiere took a feed from Hennessy and beat Matt Davis with 3:46 to go in the first.
Sheldon Wenzel put the Maineiacs back in the lead 25 seconds into the second period with an unassisted goal past Filiatrault, but another Remparts power play goal, this time off the stick of Kevin Coughlin, again knotted the score.
“Sheldon’s goal was a nice goal, he picked up the puck in the neutral zone and took a slap shot clean on the goalie,” said Durocher.
Lewiston and Quebec skated scoreless for the rest of the period, with both goaltenders coming up big on scoring threats.
In the third, Quebec took the lead for the first time, again on the power play. This time, it was Hennessy converting from Laverdiere and Coughlin.
Lewiston retaliated with a power-play goal as Balasescu scored his second of the night to knot the score at 3-3, but Shkotov was there to give the Remparts two points late in the game.
“We had four or five good chances in the slot all game that didn’t go in tonight,” Durocher said. “Their goalie had a good game, too.”
Lewiston returns home to face Shawinigan at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Central Maine Civic Center.
