The final Heal Point standings didn’t hold too much suspense when they were released Sunday, but there were still a few surprises in store for prospective tournament participants in classes B, C and D.

Some teams earned their first bye to Augusta in a generation, while others found themselves knocked out of their lofty perch.

Fryeburg Academy coach Sedge Saunders had a good idea his Raiders had secured a berth in the Class B tournament when they beat Freeport Saturday, but he didn’t know until yesterday that his team had earned its first spot in the quarterfinals since the late 1980s.

“We weren’t 100 percent sure until I went to the coaches meeting (Sunday),” Saunders said. “Winning Saturday night and Cape beating Poland helped take the pressure off a little bit.”

The pressure will be back on the sixth-seeded Raiders once they get to Augusta, where they meet No. 3 Gorham, a team rich in tournament history and success with plenty of experience inside the Augusta Civic Center.

“Obviously, you can’t replicate the Civic Center and the atmosphere,” Saunders said. “We’re going to practice at St. Joseph’s College Thursday. That’s a decent sized gym and that will give (his players) a better idea of what’s in store for them.”

One other quarterfinal matchup is also set, pitting No. 4 Lake Region against No. 5 Wells.

Defending Western B champion Mountain Valley earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of its 18-0 record. The Falcons will draw the winner of Wednesday’s preliminary between No. 7 York and No. 10 Greely.

Western Maine Conference champion Falmouth (17-1) picked up the No. 1 seed and will meet the winner of Wednesday’s prelim between No. 8 Cape Elizabeth and No. 9 Poland.

The Capers and Knights will be more than a bit familiar with each other, having just played Saturday night. Cape won that game on its home court, 64-46. The Knights (8-10) finished with a better record than the Capers (6-12), but Cape won four of its last five to finish little more than a point ahead of Poland.

“We tied for sixth (with Fryeburg and York) in the Western Maine Conference,” said Poland coach J.P. Yorkey, whose team improved from 1-17 last year to earn their first non-open tournament berth in school history. “We were shooting for fifth but we fell a little short. We still improved by 800 percent, so that’s not too bad.”

While Poland has memories of Saturday night’s game still fresh in its mind, Class C prelim combatants Telstar and Livermore Falls will have to jog their memory to recall their first matchup, which came on opening night back in December.

“You can pretty much throw that game out the window at this point,” said Telstar coach Alex Newell, whose team beat the Andies, 65-49. “They’re a 12-seed, but they can come out like any team in our league.”

The fifth-seeded Rebels will host one of four Western C prelims scheduled for Wednesday night. Defending regional champion Winthrop will travel to Madison in the 8-9 matchup, No. 11 Lisbon, back in Class C after a short stint in Class B, goes to No. 6 Boothbay, and No. 7 Old Orchard hosts No. 10 Wiscasset.

Hall-Dale (16-2) clinched the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye after beating Lisbon Saturday and will face the Winthrop/Madison winner. No. 2 Jay draws the OOB/Wiscasset winner. No. 3 St. Dom’s, the lone Western Maine Conference team to earn a bye, will meet the Boothbay/Lisbon survivor, while No. 4 Georges Valley will take on the Telstar/Livermore Falls winner.

Perhaps the most shocking development came out of Class D, where six-time defending state champion Valley did not earn the No. 1 seed. Once-beaten Hyde, which moved down from Class C this year, earned the top spot, and will face whoever comes out of the prelim between No. 8 Rangeley and No. 9 Gould.

Though undefeated (17-0), Valley had to settle for the No. 2 seed, and will meet the winner of Wednesday’s prelim between No. 7 Elan and No. 10 Richmond. No. 3 North Yarmouth Academy awaits the winner of the prelim between No. 6 Buckfield and No. 11 North Haven.

The other D prelims pit No. 4 Pine Tree against No. 13 Forest Hills and No. 5 Greater Portland Christian against No. 12 Vinalhaven.
