SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior goalie Matt Collaton stopped 25 of-26 shots as the University of Southern Maine edged Skidmore, 2-1, in hockey action Friday night.

Junior defenseman Jon Lounsbury gave the Huskies (10-13-1) an early lead four minutes into the game when he converted a relay from sophomore James LeBlanc and senior Jeremy Felt for a power-play goal. Felt set up the eventual game-winner in the second period on an assist from junior Erik Kent.

Freshman Rob Hutchinson spoiled Collaton’s shutout bid when he hit the back of the net at 12:21 of the final period for the Thoroughbreds (8-16-0).

Hamilton 2, Bowdoin 0

BRUNSWICK – Rob MacNeil made 38 saves to lead Hamilton College to a 2-0 victory over Bowdoin in men’s hockey action Friday night.

The Polar Bears (15-7-0) had their first great opportunities 12 minutes in, when Jon Landry and Adam Dann took consecutive shots in close, but MacNeil kept the game scoreless by making a pad save and a snap-glove stop for the Continentals (14-7-2).

Bowdoin dominated the first 18 minutes of the contest, holding a 15-7 edge in shots, but Hamilton took advantage on a power-play when Erik Kallio came free behind the Polar Bear defense and tucked a shot inside the left post for the only goal the Continentals needed.

Colby 4 Amherst 4

WATERVILLE – The Colby and Amherst college squads played to a 4-4 tie in men’s hockey action Friday.

The Mules (12-6-4) scrapped their way back from 1-0 and 3-1 deficits to take a 4-3 lead in the third period when Patrick Walsh executed a conversion from Nick Bayley.

However, the Lord Jeffs (11-9-3) tied the game once again on a goal from Steve Nelson.

Bowdoin goalie Ben Grandjean had 17 saves, while Dan Smith made 38 stops for Amherst.

Women’s lacrosse

Bates 15, Whittier 3

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Bates College women’s lacrosse team christened the season with a 15-3 win over Whittier College on the west coast Thursday night.

Lori Jessup, Carrie Smith and Shannon Tully each scored a pair of goals and an assist for the Bobcats (1-0). Allison Marshall, Erica Nason and Erin Culbreth also scored a pair of goals for Bates, while Sonija Parson added a goal and two assists.

Beth Wolfe scored a goal and an assist for the Poets (0-1).

Liz McNamara made 10 saves in goal for the Bobcats, who opened the season with a win for the second year in a row.

Women’s hockey

Southern Maine 4, Sacred Heart 1

GORHAM – Junior Jessica Judge netted a pair of goals to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 4-1 victory over Sacred Heart in women’s hockey action Friday night.

Following a scoreless first period, the Huskies (13-9-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead at 5:18 of the middle frame when freshman Jessica Lortie redirected a shot by Jennifer Cordone. Judge followed with her first goal of the contest.

The Pioneers (6-13) cut the lead in half on a short-handed goal by freshman Michelle Panella.

Kerry Leonard and Judge provided a goal apiece in the third period to add cushion for Southern Maine down the stretch.

Hockey

Hebron 5, Hoosac 4

HEBRON – Mark Simms netted a pair of goals to lift Hebron to a 5-4 win over Hoosac in boys’ varsity hockey action Friday.

Hebron took a 3-2 lead after the first period on scoring from Simms, Brad Flynn and Mike Kravchuk.

Randy Moreau netted a pair of goals for Hoosac in the first frame.

Luke MacDonald opened the second period with a goal for Hebron, and Hoosac responded with a pair to even the game. Simms converted a relay from Joey King to score the final and winning goal of the contest at 12:06 of the second period.
