The Black Bears are two wins away from their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
BOSTON – Joe Campbell hit two free throws with 3.9 seconds left in overtime to lead Maine past Binghamton 79-77 in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament Saturday.
Maine (19-9, 13-6) will face Stony Brook in the semifinals.
Eric Dobson missed an 18-foot jumper with six seconds left and the game tied at 77. But Campbell was fouled on the rebound and hit the game-winning free throws.
Binghamton’s Troy Hailey went the length of the court but failed to get a shot off before the buzzer.
Dobson led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Campbell had 20 points.
Binghamton (14-16, 10-9 AE) led 75-73 before Billy Williams was assessed a technical foul for arguing a shooting foul on Dobson. Kevin Reed hit both free throws to pull Maine even at 75, and Dobson hit his free throws to put Maine ahead 77-75. Binghamton’s Joel Casseus tied the game at 77 with his only points of the game with 41.7 left.
Binghamton had a 51-39 lead, but blew the lead after being held scoreless for 6:01. Dobson tied the game at 68 with 56.3 left in regulation with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws on successive possessions.
Nick Billings and Brandon Carter each scored 20 points to lead Binghamton.
Stony Brook 62, BU 58
BOSTON – D.J. Munir hit a floater with 31 seconds left to lead eighth-seeded Stony Brook to a 62-58 upset of top-seeded Boston University in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament Saturday, the first time a top seed has been knocked out in the quarterfinals in 14 years.
Stony Brook (10-19, 7-13 AE) snapped Boston’s 11-game winning streak. The Terriers were upset on their home floor in the conference tournament for the second straight season.
Munir missed the front end of a one-and-one with Stony Brook ahead 60-58 with 9.4 seconds left, and Boston got the rebound. But Bobby Santiago stripped Chaz Carr at the 3-point line and fed Mitchell Beauford downcourt for a slam dunk as time expired.
Vermont 57, New Hampshire 50
BOSTON – T.J. Sorrentine scored 19 points and shot 5-of-7 from 3-point range to lead second-seeded Vermont past seventh-seeded New Hampshire 58-50 in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament Saturday night.
Vermont (20-8, 16-3 AE) will face the Hartford-Northeastern winner in the semifinals on Sunday.
Shejdie Childs pulled New Hampshire (10-20, 6-14 AE) within 48-47 by hitting a 3-pointer and then stealing the subsequent inbounds pass for a layup with 4:53 left. But Vermont held the Wildcats to just one point over the next 4:01 and hit eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
After falling behind 25-18, Vermont closed the first half on a 9-0 run. T.J. Sorrentine capped the run with a layup with four seconds left in the half as the Catamounts grabbed a 27-25 at the break.
Ben Sturgill scored 12 points to lead the Wildcats. Germain Njila scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Vermont.
