CANTON – Money for fire department initiatives highlights articles for Saturday’s annual town meeting.

It begins at 9 a.m. March 13 at the Municipal Building.

Townspeople will be asked to approve $5,560 as matching funds for a $55,606 Federal Emergency Management Agency Fire Act Grant. The money would be used to buy air packs and other equipment for the department.

Another article will ask the town to use the Municipal Building Reserve Account and to take money from surplus to equal the balance of the $50,000 matching funds needed for the Community Development Block Grant Fire Station Grant.

Voters will also decide whether to buy approximately an acre of land on Route 108 for $6,000 for construction of a fire station. The amount would be taken from surplus.

The town will be asked to approve the Community Development Block Grant application for innovative housing in the amount of $400,000.

Article 36 will see if the town will accept an Emergency Preparedness Ordinance, which would clarify the authority of the town and its officers and employees with regard to emergency and disaster situations.

Article 37 will see if the town will adopt the Androscoggin Valley Region Pine Tree Zone Municipal Resolution, which designates a parcel of land for development incentives. AVCOG will administer the land and Canton will maintain at least one pre-permitted development site in the zone.

The budget for 2004 stands at $428,391, which is $10,833 less than last year. It does not include school costs.
