FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington will present a talk on “African Perspectives on the American Classroom” at 1 p.m. Friday, March 26, in Room 217 of the Ricker Addition building. The talk is free and open to the public. Assistant Professor of Special Education Zandile Nkabinde, originally from South Africa, and her colleague Otrude N. Moyo, a University of Southern Maine assistant professor of social work and also from Africa, will discuss the challenges of teaching in the American classroom, the strengths they find in it and the new perspectives they bring from their home cultures. After their presentations, there will be time for questions and discussion. It’s sponsored by UMF’s Provost’s Office and its Diversity Committee. Spring Fling sale
FARMINGTON – A Spring Fling sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church on the Farmington Falls Road. There will be many tables full of baked goods and lots of other items, as well as light refreshments available. Proceeds from the table rentals and bake sale will go to the Special Olympics and other local projects. The sale is sponsored by the United Methodist Women.
College workshop
WILTON – The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will offer a free workshop, “The Essentials of College Planning,” for adults considering college. It will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 8 in the East Wilton CareerCenter. The Maine Educational Opportunity Center provides support services to help students from low income and working families enter college. It’s designed to help adult students overcome class, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education. Its services include assistance in choosing a college, tutoring, personal and financial counseling, career counseling, assistance in applying to college, workplace and college visits and assistance in applying for financial aid.
