AUGUSTA – The Maine Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, Health and Wellness will hold two events on Tuesday, April 6, at the State House Hall of Flags – Legislative Fitness Day and the sixth annual Contest for Communities awards celebration.

Fitness Day will begin at 9:30 a.m. Gov. John E. Baldacci will kick off the day by participating in some of the free health risk assessments available to legislators – blood pressure, cholesterol, strength, posture, flexibility, bone density and a computerized health risk assessment.

The Contest for Communities celebration will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a welcome by Council Co-Chairs Joan Benoit Samuelson and Dr. Erik Steele. Baldacci will talk about the importance of a healthy lifestyle followed by presentation of awards and recognition of programs. Contest for Communities recognizes people and programs for the role they play in supporting a healthy Maine through physical fitness and sports programs.

This year’s winners include:

Youth – School Award: Maine Winters Sports Center Healthy Hometowns Ski Program, Windham.

Youth – Community Award: Somerset Sports and Fitness Conditioning Programs, Skowhegan.

Special Populations Award: WIC-tivities, Biddeford.

Adult Award: Seacoast Management, Topsham.

Healthy Workplace – Small Business Award: Bowdoin College Dining Services, Brunswick.

Healthy Workplace – Medium Business Award: Wellness Team and Community Health Promotion, Bridgton Hospital, Bridgton.

Healthy Workplace – Large Business Award: Central Maine Medical Center, Health and Wellness Services, Lewiston.

Community Award: Health-Link, Wellness Center of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth.
