Phones were out at the Sun Journal’s Norway office for four hours Wednesday.

NORWAY – A reporter or ad salesperson without a telephone is like a plumber without a wrench – or a cook without a pot. But that was the case – for four hours Wednesday – when the phone lines were down at the Sun Journal’s Norway office.

A truck passed through Main Street about 10:30 a.m. and caught the phone lines crossing over Main Street, dragging them to the ground.

“It sounded like something hit the building,” said office manager Mary Ann Guilford.

Verizon repairman Dave Dixon said the yank pulled a wooden faceplate from the building and nearly took the electronic gear off the lower side of the building.

He said the lines were hung more than 18 feet above the ground.

Police Officer Warren “Duffy” Ellsworth said he had reports of a pulp truck, a tractor and trailer with a canvass top and a large box truck as possible culprits.

“I was coming down the Lake Road shortly after the call came through and I only saw Sheldon,” Ellsworth said.

He was referring to Sheldon Morgan of A.S. Morgan & Sons Trucking, West Paris.

Morgan drove his logging truck through town several minutes after the wire was felled and got it caught in his side rails and front grill.

He had to stop in the road and untangle his vehicle.

As to the real culprit, Ellsworth said, “Take your pick.”
