CASCO – A Poland Spring Academy open house will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Casco Village Church, United Church of Christ.

Lodge degree

AUBURN – Ashlar Lodge 105, AF and AM, will hold a special communication on Monday, April 5, at the Auburn Masonic Temple, 1021 Turner St. The work of the evening will be an Entered Apprentice Degree, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 6:30 supper.

Official visit

AUBURN – Liberty Rebekah Lodge 94 will meet Monday, April 5, with a 6 p.m. supper preceding the meeting at 7.

Roxanne Andrews of Westport Island, vice president of the Rebekah Assembly of Maine, will make her official visit. The lodge has prepared a special tableau for her. The president’s hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross,” and her song, “Angels Among Us,” will be presented by Margaret Sjostrom of Lewiston, assembly soloist.

All Rebekahs are invited. Fidelity Rebekah Lodge 4 of Auburn, Colfax Rebekah Lodge 27 of Mechanic Falls, and Nina Rebekah Lodge 86 of Lisbon, the District 3 lodges, received special invitations.

The district meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, with Sally Wentworth of Nina Lodge, district deputy president, presiding, assisted by her marshal, Gail Morgan, also of Nina.

Grange meeting

AUBURN – Danville Junction Grange 65 will hold the annual open meeting on Thursday, April 8, with dessert at 6 p.m.

The program beginning at 7 p.m. will consist of music by Kathy Haley and a talk on the history of the grange by Doug Hodgkin, a member of Wales Grange. Hodgkin has researched the history of the grange and has written the history of Lewiston Grange.

Also present will be State Master Steve Verrill, who will present membership certificates to several long-time members. A community service award and appreciation certificate will also be presented.

All grange members and community residents are invited.

Nurses luncheon

AUBURN – The Central Maine General Hospital-Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing will hold a luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Village Inn.

Sharon Khurt, school of nursing director, and Susan Baltrus, associate director, will discuss the school after the meeting. All area nurses are invited. Call 783-4322 for information and to register.

Insurance group

AUBURN – The National Association of Insurance Women – Androscoggin Valley will meet Wednesday, April 14, at Martindale Country Club, Beech Hill Road.

The meeting will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m. and dinner at 5:45. Members will celebrate past president’s night, with a special recognition for all of the past NAIW Andy Valley presidents in attendance. Member Jane Saucier will present a line dancing demonstration.

The National Association of Insurance Women (International) is a group of insurance professionals dedicated to the development of leaders in the insurance industry.

Living history

AUBURN – “Widow Carver, a Maine Pioneer Woman of 1779”, a dramatic living history program, will be presented for the Woman’s Literary Union at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St.

Widow Carver was the second settler to arrive in the wilderness, which is now Livermore, being preceded only by Deacon Elijah Livermore. With seven children age 4 years to 20, she braved the hardships of pioneer life. Her story will be told by Bille Gammon with audience participation.

Gammon, who developed Norlands Living History Center and its educational programs 30 years ago, frequently presents history programs for college classes, historical societies and other groups.

A graduate of three branches of the University of Maine system, she holds a master’s degree in education from USM and an honorary doctorate from UMF. She has been a public school teacher, librarian and museum director and now enjoys her role as a story teller.

Bridge tourney

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Bridge Club winners of the quarterly club championship at the Multi-Purpose Center on March 30 were: N/S, first, Betty and Doug Sise, second overall; second, Patricia Garcia and David Lock, third overall; third, Anna Vitiello and Roger Briggs, fifth overall.

E/W, first, Nancy Lindgren and Dick Horne, first overall; second, Alberta Turner and Connie Simpson, fourth overall; third, Pat Quinn and Les Buzzell.

Winners of the club championship at Schooner Estates in Auburn on March 31 were: first, Rosemarie Goodwin and Mike St. John; second, Katie Love and Don Smith; third, Ann Riley and Les Buzzell; fourth, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; fifth, Lucille Bilodeau and Alberta Turner.
